Using AI content

Do I need to label AI-generated content on social media?

Short answer

Sometimes. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have their own rules for labelling AI-generated content, especially realistic images, video or audio that people could mistake for real people or events. The rules differ by platform and by country and change often, so check each platform's current policy and local law before you post. When in doubt, label it.

General guidance, not legal advice: when to label AI-generated content, and what to check before you post.

What platforms tend to look at

Platform rules on AI-generated content focus mostly on whether people could be misled: realistic depictions of real people, places or events, and altered footage presented as real. Clearly illustrated or stylised graphics are usually treated differently. Some platforms can also add their own AI labels to content they detect as AI-made.

Ads have stricter rules

Advertising policies are usually stricter than the rules for ordinary posts, especially around claims and sensitive topics. Read each platform's ad policy as well as its community rules, and remember that local advertising law applies too.

How Melon Cut helps you check

Melon Cut Design's Check for social media reviews a finished post against summaries of official Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok guidance, and either says it is compatible or lists what to fix. It is a helpful check before you post, not legal advice or a promise that a post will be accepted.
