Editing pictures

What is the difference between upscaling and enhancing an image?

Short answer

Upscaling makes an image bigger: it increases the width and height and adds detail so the larger picture stays sharp. Enhancing makes an image cleaner: it improves texture and sharpness and fixes artifacts such as blur or compression blocks. Upscale when the picture is too small, enhance when it looks rough, and do both when it is both.

Two tools that sound alike and fix different problems.

When to upscale

The picture looks fine on screen but is too small for what you need: a print, a banner, a large display or a close crop. Upscale in Melon Cut Design enlarges it 2× or 4×.

When to enhance

The picture is big enough but looks soft, noisy or blocky - often after it has been compressed or saved several times. Enhance details in Melon Cut Design improves texture and sharpness and cleans up those artifacts.

Using both

For a small, rough picture, enhance it first so the upscaler starts from clean detail, then upscale it. Both tools work on up to 8 pictures in one request.
