Social media

What is a safe zone on social media?

Short answer

A safe zone is the area of a post, story or video where important content won't be cropped or hidden behind the app's buttons, names and captions. Keep text, logos and faces inside it. Melon Cut uses 13% from the sides and 12% from the top and bottom for 4:5 posts, 8% and 14% for stories, and 8%, 14% and 20% for vertical videos.

What gets cropped or covered, and the margins that avoid it.

Why safe zones exist

Platforms show the same picture in different places. A 4:5 post appears in full in the feed but as a tile cut from its middle on your profile grid. Stories and vertical videos are covered at the top and bottom by names, captions and buttons.

The safe zones Melon Cut uses

Each margin is measured from the edge, as a share of the width for the sides and of the height for the top and bottom.

  • 4:5 post: 13% from the sides, 12% from the top and bottom
  • 9:16 story: 8% from the sides, 14% from the top and bottom
  • 9:16 video: 8% from the sides, 14% from the top, 20% from the bottom

How Melon Cut keeps to them

Social posts, stories and social media videos are made with key content inside their safe area, and a brand's real logo is always placed inside it. Check for social media flags anything the Instagram grid would crop.
